Some years ago having a prototype durable or almost perfect to prove it wasn´t be able. One way to make the persons could experience an idea was only by making a render, but at this way the people can´t experience how is the product like how it does feel or if they can used it.
Other thing that the prototypes is to help to make it like a three dimensional sketchpad, to prove that it could be mechanically viable and to make less or correct the mistakes early so it could reduce the cost on the production.
Rapid prototyping can help the design cycle but it need to have some trial en error to create new things and because mistakes are inevitable.
The proces on design some times is better to make a render or a sketch but when some person is going to interact with a person is when you can use this proces of rapid prototyping.
People that taste a product could not touch the prototyp because it can break but with tis process they can touch it and you can see perfectly if is usefull or not you can see mistakes and it could be corrected by a lower price that if you see the mistake when the product is all ready on market.
